Meeting Canada’s energy efficiency requirements for energy-using products
Most major economies around the world have adopted regulations that mandate minimum efficiency requirements for many types of energy-using products. These regulations as well as voluntary energy efficiency programmes are being continuously updated to reflect the introduction of newer technologies that promise even greater energy efficiency. As a result, manufacturers of energy-using products face significant challenges in ensuring that their products are accepted by regulators and the market at large.
TÜV SÜD is a leading provider of comprehensive testing and certification services for all types of energy-using products. Our global network of technical experts, combined with our state-of-the-art testing laboratories, assure a single source solution for meeting all applicable requirements, standards and voluntary schemes. And TÜV SÜD technical professionals are actively involved in international advisory boards and standards development activities, ensuring the most up-to-date knowledge of current and changing requirements.
Represented in over 800 locations worldwide, TÜV SÜD has an unsurpassed track record of meeting and exceeding the requirements and expectations of our client companies. The TÜV SÜD brand and our distinctive blue octagon mark are instantly recognised around the globe as symbols of quality and safety, and will increase customer confidence in your brand.
Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations establish energy efficiency requirements for more than 50 separate categories of energy-using products manufactured, imported or sold in Canada, including lighting products, household appliances, and heating and ventilation equipment. Energy efficiency requirements for specific categories of products are detailed in Schedule 1 of the Regulations and are subject to period amendments.
Manufacturers and importers must obtain independent verification that their products meet the applicable energy efficiency requirements from a Certification Body accredited by the Standards Council of Canada for energy efficiency verification, prior to filing an energy efficiency report with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the responsible regulatory authority. All regulated energy-using products manufactured, imported or sold in Canada must bear the energy efficiency verification mark of the accredited Certification Body. Certain types of lighting products must also bear a lighting product label that includes information on light output, energy use, and expected product life.
Many energy-using products intended for sale or importation in Canada must comply with NRCan energy efficiency levels. Manufacturers can obtain a third-party validation of energy performance from an appropriately accredited Certification Body. Since Canada’s Energy Guide labelling requirements correspond with those of the U.S. Energy Guide labelling program, a single approval can be used for access to both U.S. and Canadian markets. In most cases, a product that complies with the U.S ENERGY STAR® requirements will also meet NRCan requirements in Canada.
TÜV SÜD’s Energy Efficiency Verification services are intended to support the efforts of manufacturers, importers and retailers to achieve compliance with NRCan requirements. We are accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to certify many types of energy-using products to NRCan energy efficiency limits. TÜV SÜD is also a recognised Testing Laboratory and Certification Body under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR programme, and a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) under the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
In addition, TÜV SÜD’s global Energy Efficiency Centres of Excellence are equipped to test and certify energy-using products to worldwide energy efficiency requirements and standards, making us a single source for testing and certification services.
TÜV SÜD offers a comprehensive suite of testing, certification and advisory services on the regulations, standards and voluntary energy efficiency and performance programs applicable to all types of energy-using products. TÜV SÜD technical experts can also assist in product design and development, quality testing, environmental certification and transport monitoring, and can provide customised services in support of global supply chain activities. The TÜV SÜD blue octagon certification mark is globally recognised as a symbol of product safety.
