LED Lighting Facts Programme
Demonstrating photometric performance of solid state lighting products
The photometric performance characteristics of lighting products serve as important indicators of the brightness and quality of the light that they produce, and are often used by buyers and consumers to identify those lighting products that are most suitable for their specific requirements. However, assessing the photometric characteristics of LED and other solid state lighting products can be challenging due to their integrated design.
The LED Lighting Facts label presents accurate and verifiable photometric performance data based on independent testing. As such, the LED Lighting Facts label enables buyers, specifiers and consumers to review and evaluate the photometric characteristics of individual LED lighting products, and to select those products that are most appropriate for use in specific applications. By providing buyers with essential performance information, lighting products that bear the LED Lighting Facts label have a competitive advantage over otherwise similar lighting products.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the LED Lighting Facts programme is designed to provide buyers with detailed information about the photometric performance characteristics of the solid-state lighting products they buy, including lamps and lamp systems incorporating LED technology. The program’s LED Lighting Facts label provides buyers with data on the following performance characteristics:
- Luminaire light output
- Efficacy (i.e., lumens per watt)
- Measured power (watts)
- Correlated color temperature (CCT)
- Color rendering index (CRI)
In addition to the above characteristics, manufacturers can optionally list information on two additional metrics, warranty and LED lumen maintenance.
Manufacturers who participate in the LED Lighting Facts programme generally provide an integrating sphere report using LM-79 test methods. As of 1 June 2012, the program only accepts test reports from testing laboratories listed on the program’s approved testing laboratories list. However, the Lighting Facts programme will soon allow manufacturers to group related LED lighting products into “families” and limit testing to a single product within a family. The LED Lighting Facts programme is also expected to implement market surveillance efforts and random verification testing to confirm the compliance of listed products.
