ENEC and ENEC+
Providing reassurance for product safety and performance
In the European Union (EU), the CE mark is accepted as evidence of an electrical product’s compliance with the essential requirements of applicable directives. However, CE marking is typically supported exclusively by a manufacturer’s or importer’s self-declaration of conformity. In such cases, compliance with mandatory safety requirements has not been validated by an independent third-party, thereby potential exposing buyers to unsafe electrical products.
In recent years, the European Norms Electrical Certification (ENEC) scheme has gained popularity in the EU as a valuable complement to CE marking. Operating under the authority of the European Electrical Products Certification Association, the ENEC scheme allows manufacturers and importers to clearly demonstrate compliance with applicable product safety requirements found in EN (European Norm) standards as verified through testing by an independent third-party testing laboratory.
The ENEC scheme currently applies to the following product types:
- Luminaires and associated components
- Transformers
- Power supply units
- Switches for appliances
- IT equipment
- Automatic electrical controls
- Household products
- Connecting devices, suppression capacitors and filters
The ENEC scheme constitutes a full certification scheme as defined in ISO/IEC 17067:2013, Conformity assessment - fundamentals of product certification and guidelines for product certification schemes. Authorised ENEC scheme testing laboratories are subject to a rigorous initial assessment as well as a stringent reassessment programme of testing operations.
In the area of lighting products, the European Electrical Products Certification Association has introduced the ENEC+ scheme, which assesses the design and performance of lighting products, including LEDs. The ENEC+ scheme complements the ENEC scheme by independently verifying both safety and performance. The ENEC+ scheme can also reduce the need for separate performance testing as part of the procurement process, since ENEC+ testing generally covers all initial specification elements.
To date, more than 16,000 valid ENEC and ENEC+ certifications have been issued, covering more than 85,000 products sold or distributed in the EU. Electrical products that have been ENEC certified have been independently assessed for their safety in accordance with European safety standards, thereby providing buyers with an increased level of confidence. Lighting products bearing the ENEC and ENEC+ marks have additionally been evaluated for relevant performance criteria, potentially eliminating the need for duplicate performance testing.
